Weekend Wrap: Loneliness Assuaged by Dungeons and Dragons

Each weekend, I like to pause, reflect, and look back on the past week. This isn't meant to be a deep dive or sweeping life philosophy—just a collection of things that caught my attention, made me think, brought me joy, or stayed with me in some way.

What I Noticed

We are social creatures. There is no denying that. It's entirely possible that we may wish we weren't social. We may fancy ourselves as not social, but we are.

It's just how it is.

And being here alone, at home, this past week+ has reminded me of that. Let's just say I have "watched" way too many episodes of TV shows, strictly so there was the sound of other humans in the house.

So, find someone to connect with this week. It doesn't need to be someone new. Just connect with someone this week. You'll be surprised how much good it can do.

What Helped

D&D.

Seriously. It helped. A lot. While my family was gone, we managed to get two sessions of D&D in, and it made a huge difference having people in the house. Having fun. Interacting with others.

It has been such a boon for me.

What I’m Enjoying

Bad movies.

Sometimes they can just be fun. But I have really watched some bad movies this week. Dumb, brainless, not well-executed. Just silly movies. Dumb to the point I worry that they may have made me a little more dumb as well.

But I had fun with them.

Mostly.

What I’m Practicing

I have put in some really good novel prep time this past week. I am close to having all 15 of the main beats locked in. I don't know how much additional planning I am going to do. I know I need some scenes connecting some of the beats, but I'm not sure I want to plan them all out.

There is something fascinating about sitting down and writing, and having it go in a direction I didn't expect. I always enjoy that, and want to experience it again.

But I feel this book is taking far better shape than any I have previously written.

And that is very exciting.

One Thing to Improve

My nutrition has been all over the place this week. Sure, it happens. I need to tighten that up, though.

Life has been chaotic lately. I'm using that as an excuse. I should stop doing that. That's the plan.

Wrapping Up

Still more travel this coming week. And I don't really even know what it is. Surprise travel. I suppose we will see what it is all about. I am excited, but after the last month+, I am actually looking forward to things being regular and boring.

As I tell my patients: in my line of work, boring is the best thing in the world.
